An Introduction to Crowd Count

We understand the need for reliable crowd counts in a readily accessible format. Using this data provides a basis for informed decision making for the planning and safety of events. From planning key aspects, such public safety and ensuring appropriate emergency services, through to assessing the economic impact of events.

The team at Crowd Count (also known as EdgRESEARCH) have been working over the past ten years to improve the reliability of crowd counts at large events. Events for which we have provided counts include New Year’s Eve Fireworks, Moomba Festival and Parade, Melbourne Fashion Festival, Melbourne Knowledge Week, Melbourne Firelight Festival and Melbourne Music Week.

Over this time we have researched and tested a number of techniques for counting crowds in a variety of situations. We recognise that each event is unique and with some events there is a distinct lifecycle which consists of four stages: Pre-Event, Event Build-Up, Event Peak and Event Dispersal.

By using a range of data inputs and crowd counting techniques that has been refined over time it is possible to gather information and in doing so strengthen our understanding of the build up, peaks and dynamics of the event over time and space.
